Funeral services for William J. "Bill" Spence, 70, of Newcastle WY, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 1, 2008 at First United Methodist Church with the Pastor Norman Brotzman and Reverend Eric Parker officiating. Graveside services following at Greenwood Cemetery in Newcastle.
Bill went home to be with the Lord on October 28, 2008. He suffered an unexpected heart attack and was being treated at Rapid City Memorial Hospital in Rapid City SD.
Bill was born December 8, 1937 in Herrick, SD to William and Marie Spence. The family later moved to Burke, SD, where he graduated from High School.
In 1962, Bill and his parents lived in Igloo, SD where he worked at the Susquahanna Western Uranium Mine. This was the year Bill met the love of his life, Ruthie J. Zerbst. The couple began their married life together on November 7, 1964. Shortly after their marriage the couple moved to Newcastle, WY and have lived and raised their family there for 44 years.
Bill had an associate's degree from Dakota Wesleyan and attended Colorado School of Banking, affiliated with The University of Colorado. He also held an Insurance Brokers License and Real Estate Broker's License. He honorably served in the National Guard. He worked at many jobs including, Piggly Wiggly as a butcher, Susquahanna Western Uranium Mine, the Jim Zerbst Ranch, Halliburton, National Bank of Newcastle and The Fountain Motor Inn. He became a co-owner of A-1 Insurance and Real Estate Agency, in 1982. He and his wife, Ruthie, became sole owners and operators in 1990.
He was a faithful member of The Newcastle Assembly of God Church and belonged to the Newcastle Lions Club.
Bill loved people and knew how to celebrate life. He enjoyed trips as simple as going to Rapid with Ruthie to traveling to Alaska, Florida, Jamaica, Mexico, and Nevada. He also made many trips to Jackson Hole, WY but most of all he loved traveling through the Black Hills.
Bill was an amazing husband, terrific father, loving grandfather, and friend to everyone.
Survivors include his wife Ruthie of Newcastle, WY; Son Clint Nancy and Caleb J. Spence all of Sheridan WY. Daughter Julie, Brian Gould and children Brianne and Tyler, all of Spring Creek, NV. Bill's Mother; Marie Spence of Hot Springs SD. Sister, Marge Les Dappen of Omaha, NE.
Pallbearers will be Mike Waggener, John Ackerman, Jack Hansen, Frank Stearns, Archie Collins and Billy Bob Porter. Honorary Pallbearers will be Jim Piana, Charlie Smith, Don Thorson, Lloyd Cox, Merle Harp and all his friends and family.
