Ruth Whitney

May 16, 1915 — October 14, 2007

Ruth Whitney, 92, of Newcastle, died Sunday, October 14, 2007. She was born May 16, 1915 in North Powder, Oregon to Will and Ada Dowdy.

As a young girl she lived with her family on ranches in Oklahoma and Colorado. As one of the oldest girls in a family of 12 children, she had many responsibilities at an early age. In addition to helping in the fields picking cotton or breaking colts for her Dad, she tended to her younger brothers and sisters.

She was a ranch woman throughout her life. In 1960 the trail led her to Wyoming and the Black Hills that she came to love so much.

Ruth was always the nucleus of her family and held many family gatherings at her home. Her door was always open.

Always a great cook, she knew how to feed a crew, whether she was working at the Four Way School, Western Café, or Buckhorn or if she was feeding the thrashing hands, branding crews, hunting parties, or a 4-H club. For many years she brewed the coffee for the Weston County Fair barbeque in a large cast iron kettle.

She enjoyed making quilts, hunting arrowheads, and she took start of her Mother?s yellow roses to every place that she ever lived. She was an avid collector of antiques and things that had sentimental value to her. Her collections include everything from marbles and cake plates to cowbells, coffee pots and interesting rocks.

Survivors include her sons, Tom Arnold Marilyn, Newcastle; Bill Whitney Judy, Baker, MT; daughter, Molly Beverlin Dan of Anchorage, AK; four brothers, Pat Dowdy and Mick Dowdy of Spearfish; Bill Dowdy and Jim Dowdy, Thermopolis; one sister, Lola Cordingly, Thermopolis; her Grandchildren, Tammy Turk Raymon, Julie Pederson Jim, Sam Beverlin Cindi, Jay Beverlin Jan, Lacey Whitney, Joel Whitney, and Tyson Whitney; and Great Grandchildren, Jake Beverlin, Jessi Beverlin, Justin Beverlin, Jenna Beverlin and Austin Whitney.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, Scott Dowdy, Jerry Dowdy, Jack Dowdy, Don Dowdy; and two sisters, Shirley Condreay and Faye Lavengood; one grandson, Jack Arnold; and her husbands.

Services will be 3:30pm Thursday, October 18th at the Country Church at Four Corners, WY with Pastors Charles Dutcher and Bill Haley officiating. Internment will be at the Boyd Cemetery at Four Corners.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations in Ruth?s name be made to Weston County Home Health Services and sent to the family at P.O. Box 98, Newcastle, Wyoming 82701.
