Roma Claudine Reed Tanner passed away peacefully at age 97 on February 1, 2010 at the Weston County Manor in Newcastle, WY.
She was born Dec. 8, 1912 in Gillette, WY to Claude and Bessie Hall Reed. Her family homesteaded on Middle Prong Creek near Kendrick and her father worked for the 4N ranch. When she was old enough to go to high school she boarded in Arvada and attended school there.
Roma married Willard Bill Tanner on April 15, 1933 in Gillette, WY. His family had the homestead just south of the Reed place. He worked for the railroad at Kendrick and they lived in one end of a box car with his parents living in the other end.
In 1940 the railroad moved the family to Osage where they lived in the section house until moving to Newcastle in 1947 when Bill went to work for the Sioux Oil Company. They later built Tanner Trailer Court and Laundry near Dow Park.
Roma loved to sew and made many beautiful quilts for her family as well as sewed for other people. She was an avid photographer and never went anywhere without her camera. She loved to drive through the Black Hills and was always ready to go hunting in the fall. She was also a rock hound and the family always wondered when she saw a deer or elk if she would take its picture, throw a rock, shoot it, or feed it.
She also enjoyed reading, crocheting and gardening.
Preceding her in death were her parents Claude and Bessie Reed, brother Gail Reed, husband Bill, son Francis Duane Jack Tanner, and grandson, Michael Reed Tanner.
Roma is survived by her sister Doris of Newcastle, four children, Merril Pete and his wife Janice of Newcastle, Russel and his wife Dixie of Reedsport, OR, Jean Tanner and her husband Frank of Riverton, WY, Bonnie Sisneros and her husband Manuel of Greeley, CO, daughter-in-law Barbara Tanner of Rupert, ID, 11 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren.
