Richard Smith

October 20, 1937 — March 22, 2014

Richard C. Smith Dick Smith grew up in west Texas and graduated from Floydada High School. While attending Texas A&M he met and married the love of his life, Clara Lee Smith. After college, he served our country as an officer in the U.S Army. His sales career at Rotor Tool moved the family from Houston to Dallas to St. Louis to the Detroit area, settling in Birmingham, Michigan. He worked with the automotive industry developing and selling tools used to build cars. This is his daughter's limited understanding of his job. Dick and Clara Lee spent happy winters in Maui where they found new friends and new interests. Dick never met a stranger and made friends wherever he went. He loved to barbecue and no one made better ribs and brisket. He was a voracious reader and was one of the first to start reading e-books. He loved gadgets and computers and books, but loved his friends and family more. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife and was survived by his two daughters, Jodi Detwiler and Patti Smith; his sisters, Nancy Welborn husband James and Diana Smith. A private scattering of his ashes will be held in Lahaina and a celebration of his life will be held at a later date in Birmingham. In lieu of flowers or memorials, donations may be made to the Texas A&M Foundation, 401 George Bush Drive, College Station, TX 77840.
