Memorial services for Norman N. ?Red? Phillips, 73, will be held at Weston County Senior Center on Thursday May 11th at 3:00 p.m. with Pastors Charles Dutcher and Pastor Bill Haley officiating. Worden Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Phillips died Saturday, May 6th at Hot Springs, SD VA Hospital following a long illness.
Red was born February 4, 1933 in Upton, WY to John Sheldon Phillips and Dorothy Adeline Watson Phillips. He grew up in Upton and Newcastle area and attended school in Newcastle. As a youth, he worked on several ranches and particularly enjoyed riding bare-back broncos in rodeos. He enlisted in the navy in 1952, serving first in San Francisco, California and then in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. He was honorably discharged in 1960.
On December 3, 1958 he married Dorothy C. Dolly Christensen, of Ocean Park, Washington in Newcastle. They lived in Newcastle where they raised their family of four children. Although they later divorced they remained good friends. Red worked in many different trades but spent most of his time in the oil field and driving truck. He was a man of many talents. He was an exceptional artist who loved woodworking and leather work.
He was best known for his music. He was one of the original members of the Western Ramblers, as lead guitarist, with Don Plato, John Rothleutner, and Al Lachett. They traveled and played all over the region for countless dances. They also had their own radio show. Afterwards, he played in many bands in the area and played back up guitar for several visiting artists. His last band was called CC3, where he played with two sons Jerry and Steve, a memorable time for all.
He was a loving and caring man who loved his children and his grandchildren. He was well liked by all who knew him.
His survivors include three sons Jerry Linda, James Monica of Newcastle and Steve Wendy of Medicine Bow, Wyoming and one daughter Sandy of Wheatridge, Colorado; one sister Pauline Prell of Douglas, Wyoming; nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and step-father Andrew ?Shorty? Gates.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been set up for the Hot Springs Hospice Unit at Hot Springs VA Hospital, Hot Springs, SD.
