Mrs. Vaughn passed away peacefully Tuesday, January 2nd at her home in Newcastle following a courageous battle with cancer. She was cared for in her final days by Larita, Kim, Robin, her daughters and Miranda her granddaughter. Also, Carmen, Rogene, and Donna with Hospice and Home Health Care.
Norita was born December 5, 1938 in Newcastle, Wyoming the daughter of Leo and Virginia Cool Currey. She married Larry Updike on April 13, 1953 in Rapid City, SD. To this union three daughters were born, Larita Doug Brown, of Newcastle, WY, Kim Gilbreath of Austin, TX and Robin David Miller of Lubbock, TX.
Norita had many accomplishments in her life. She owned and operated three Thrifty Rent-A-Car locations in the Rio Grande Valley in south Texas. She also owned Budget Rent-A-Car in Amarillo and Lubbock, Texas, until she sold them to her parents Leo and Ginger Currey and her brother and sister-in-law Les and Lois Currey.
After selling her Rent-A-Car business she moved to Lubbock and owned and operated the Kountry Konvenience Store for several years. In June of 1995, she moved back to Newcastle to be near her parents and help her daughter Larita at the Old Mill Inn where she was employed for eleven years. She also had the opportunity to travel to many places including the Bahamas, Jamaica, and Mexico City. She enjoyed dancing, especially with her Daddy, camping, antiquing and reading books.
Norita is preceded in death by her parents, two nephews, L.V. Currey and Cris Currey of Amarillo, Texas and her special friend Doc Kennedy.
Survivors include three daughters, two sons-in-law, one step-son Brian Roxanne Nordlund of Ennis, MT; one sister Norine Ed Maier of Dickinson, ND; one brother Leslie Lois Currey of Amarillo, TX; eight grandchildren, three step-grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; two step great grandchildren and two more on the way. Also numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
