Bill Updike was born in Rapid City, South Dakota on June 7, 1932 and was raised in Osage Wyoming by his parents Lester and Edith Updike.
He enlisted in the US Navy during the Korean War and was stationed at the Naval Base in Astoria Oregon. He married in Astoria and lived there for several years where he started his career of furniture and floor covering sales. He moved to Portland Oregon in the early 1960's to continue his career in floor covering installation and sales with Paulsen's.
He relocated to Anchorage, Alaska in the late 1960's where he ran his own floor covering business for over 10 years; later returning to Osage where he worked in the oil patch for a short period of time.
He moved back to Portland OR in the mid 1980's, resuming his floor covering and accessory sales career with Carpet Services of Swan Island. He remained with Carpet Services until 1997 at which time he moved permanently back to his family home in Osage, Wyoming.
His favorite pastimes were partying, dancing, cards and cribbage, reading, hunting and fishing. In his retirement, he enjoyed hours of friendship at the Weston County Senior Center. He loved the hills and back roads of NE Wyoming and relished showing these areas to family and friends.
He passed away in the Weston County Hospital of natural causes on December 10, 2011. He is survived by two daughters; Cheryl Updike Poe of Santa Maria, CA and Marcia Updike Raisanen of Tucson, AZ; an aunt, Bess Ruffing of Lusk, WY; cousins Judy Sherer of Aurora CO and Mary Ethel Ogle of La Vernia, TX; 3 grandchildren, all of Santa Maria CA, Laci A. Poe Williamson, Robert N. Poe, and Kyleigh N. Poe; numerous extended family members and good friends.
A memorial service is planned for 2:30pm, Friday January 13, 2012 at Worden's Funeral Chapel, followed by burial in the Greenwood Cemetery. Remembrances to Weston County Senior Center.
