Life time Weston County resident Veronica M. "Toots" Adkins, 88, died at Weston
County Health Services on March 17,2010, in Newcastle, Wyoming.
"Toots" as she was known by her friends, was the eleventh of twelve children, born on
March 11, 1922 to Charlie and Veronica Miller of the Four Comers area.
On July 41h, 1941, Toots married Kenneth W. Adkins, of the Fairview area. In the 62
years they were together they shared two daughters: Linda Aston and Marie Podio and
their families.
The epitome of the w.()rking woman was "Toots" she was never one to be idle. Staying
busy and working was just her way. She never had "nothing" to do. Working and helping
her husband managing a ranch proved to be her "life's calling." She was Kenneth's right
hand; whatever the job, she was there willing and able. Whether it was helping to bring a
newborn calf into this world, move cattle by horseback, fix fence or just to be ready with
a cup of coffee when Kenneth came in from the fields, this was her life and she loved it.
Rodeo became an intricate part of the Adkins' life. Kenneth began a career in
announcing. Once again Toots was right there beside him. Timing events and helping to
keep things running smooth. They were a team and rodeo producers knew they could
depend on them, and they did for many years.
Just as Toots was comfortable on the ranch or working a rodeo, she was just as "at home"
playing the organ. A gifted person unable to read a musical note, could hear a song one
time, sit down at the keyboard and would begin to pick the notes out, and soon be playing
it like she'd rehearsed for days. This rare talent was duly noted within the several bands
she played with at local dances at the Clareton Community Center and the Round House
near Four Comers. People got to enjoy her music at local restaurants in the surrounding
area as well. What Toots and Kenneth enjoyed the most was in later years spending time
with their family and friends at the ranch. They were endeared to us all as "Pappy and
Grammy." Friends came repeatedly from hundreds if not thousands of miles each year to
hunt at the ranch and have a good time with them. They will be greatly missed by their
friends.
Toots Adkins was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers and sisters and her
husband Kenneth. She is survived by her two daughters: Linda (Ron) Aston, Marie (Joe)
Podio; 5 grandchildren, Joe (Donna) Podio, Andy (Dolores) Podio, Monty (Shelly)
Trumbull, Daryl Aston and Lori Aston; 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great
grandchild and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers the family wishes to establish a memorial to the Weston County Junior
Rodeo. Worden Funeral Directors are in charge of the arrangements.
