Funeral services for Velma Shook, 91, will be held at 2:00 pm Friday, June 22nd at the Newcastle Senior's Center with Pastor Bill Haley of The Country Church officiating.
Cremation and burial will take place following services. The family has asked that memorial contributions be given in Velma's name to Newcastle Senior Services, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary or The Country Church. Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 21st from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm at Worden Chapel.
Mrs. Shook died Sunday, June 17th at her home of natural causes.
Velma was born February 28, 1921 at Cambria, Wyoming the daughter of Walter L. and Agnes L. (Lynch) Hurd. She was home schooled, and also attended Coal Creek Country School and Newcastle High School. On April 7, 1937, she married Lloyd Schneider at Deadwood, South Dakota. Mr. Schneider died in 1997. On June 29, 2001 she married Louis Shook who also preceded her in death in 2007. Mrs. Shook drove the Newcastle school buses and was the owner - operator of the Mule Creek Junction Truck Stop.
She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars #2516 Auxiliary, was a board member of the Seniors' Center and also cooked for the Newcastle Lion's Club in the 1950's. Velma was a hardworking, independent woman who was proud of her family and loved everyone. She had a great sense of humor and loved dancing and playing cards.
Survivors include a daughter Maxine (Lynn) Bender of Mt. Pleasant, IA; son Walter Schneider of Gillette, WY; step son Jake (Sandi) Shook of Newcastle, WY; step daughters Kathy Duce of Pincher Creek, Alberta and Karen Daum of Houston, TX.
Grandchildren Barry Clyde of Newcastle, Brenda Study of Osage, WY, Penny Penfield of Crawfordsville, IA, David Bender of Rapid City, SD, Angie Brill of Weston, MO, Chris Schneider of Upton, WY, Keely Gershen of San Francisco, CA, Shad Schneider of Spearfish, SD, Tiffany Schneider of Gillette, WY, Tara Schneider of Gillette, WY. Also surviving are seventeen great grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her parents, both husbands, and a daughter Bernice Clyde.
