Mary Ann Shannon, 93, of Upton, WY died Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at Weston County Manor in Newcastle, WY.
She was born Sept. 7, 1916 at the family ranch south of Upton to David J. and Elisabeth C. (Jost) Nolan. She graduated from Upton High School and received a teaching certificate from the University of Wyoming. She taught school in Weston county schools for several years. After a stay in California to help with the war effort she returned to Upton where she worked in the Upton Post Office. She worked there many years until she retired from her position as postmistress in 1975.
She married Delbert (Mickey) Shannon on July 7, 1947. They made their home in Upton and moved to the family ranch where she lived until she moved to assisted living in Sundance. He preceded her in death in 1979.
She was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church and CCW. She was a member of TOPS for many years and belonged to a bowling league. She joined the Friendship Force and traveled to many locations. As a member of the Weston County Historical Society she worked to preserve the history of the area. The American Cancer Society and American Heart Association benefited from her tireless fundraising efforts. In 2004 she was chosen Upton's Citizen of the year. She enjoyed riding horses, golfing and visiting family.
Survivors include her brother Pat Nolan of Buffalo, WY, sister-in-law Joan Shannon and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at 6:00 p.m. with a rosary at 7:00 p.m. on Friday March 26 at Worden Funeral Home in Newcastle.
Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday March 27, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Upton with the Rev. Philip Wagner officiating. Burial at the Black Hills National Cemetery bear Sturgis, SD on Monday, March 29th at 2:00 pm.
The family suggests memorials to Old Town in Upton, or St. Anthony's Catholic Church building fund.
