Doris Lorraine (Mirich) Engle, 87, died Thursday, June 2, at Weston County Manor.
She was born November 20, 1923, in Thornton, WY to Steven (Sr) and Minnie (Zimmerman) Mirich. As a young girl she lived on the family ranch near Thornton and was educated and graduated from Upton High School. While in school she participated in every athletic activity available, her favorites were basketball and track. After high school, she received a normal teaching degree from the University of Wyoming. She then returned to northeastern Wyoming and taught in Rozet.
On September 23, 1944 she married Robert J Engle. The couple made their home on the Engle Ranch west of Newcastle. Doris was the secretary for Engle Ranch Inc. and enjoyed breeding and selling Quarter Horses.
Doris shared her love for community through many clubs and organizations. She was a local and state president of PEO Chapters, and an active member of Eastern Star, Weston County Cow Bells, 21st Century Club, and the First United Methodist Church in Newcastle. She held positions on the Joint Power Board and Library Board. She was a proud member of the committee for the McLeure Scholarship.
She enjoyed reading anything and everything she could get her hands on. She was one of the best cooks in Weston County and enjoyed preparing meals for the family and ranch help. She loved watching her grandchildren be successful in showing stock at the County and State Fairs and participating in athletic events at Newcastle High School. She also treasured family gatherings and a good visit with friends.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents, Steven (Sr) and Minnie Mirich, four half-brothers Carl and Morris Barritt, and George and Mark Mirich, and one full brother Steven (Jr) Mirich, and her husband Robert Engle. Survivors include two sons Bill Engle (Linda) and Steven Engle (Kathleen), both of Newcastle, five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, a sister-in-law, two nieces and two nephews.
Services were held Saturday, June 4, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church of Newcastle, with Pastor Paul Holland officiating. Burial followed at the Greenwood Cemetery. A memorial has been established in honor of Doris for the Weston County Library Foundation
