Beverly Jean Johansen, 73, joined her Lord on May 1, 2010 after a lengthy illness.
Beverly was born on Nov. 10, 1936 to Melvin and Frances(Orton)
Christensen in Alsen, SD. As a child her family moved to Oregon during WW2 and then returned to the Beresford SD area where she attended school and graduated in 1954.
Beverly married Donald Hass and had 3 children, Wayne, Paula, &
Rodney. Beverly and Donald later divorced.
Beverly married her true love, Duane Johansen, on April 12, 1968, and
he later adopted her 3 children. One year after marriage they
welcomed their daughter Stacey.
Nov. of 1971 saw her family moving to Newcastle, Wyo. In the early years
after moving the family took in foster son David Bundt; while he was
attending high school. Beverly worked at the Newcastle Country Club
and the Newcastle Middle and High School cafeterias for 19 years.
In 1996 Beverly retired and began a new career in volunteer work. She
volunteered at the Newcastle B.R.E.A.D. office, Newcastle Housing
Board, delivering Senior meals, Crafty Critters, and on various church
committees. Beverly was recognized for all her volunteering with the
Volunteer of the Year Award from the Weston Co. Manor. She was also
awarded the Quiet Disciple Witness Award in 2008 for her service to the First
United Methodist Church. Along with her volunteer work she loved
gardening, yard work, and traveling with her family and friends.
Beverly is survived by her children; Wayne (Char) Johansen of
Minneapolis, MN., Paula (Gerry) Carr of Newcastle, WY., Rodney (Pam)
Johansen of Minneapolis, Mn., and Stacey (Earl) Sallee of Rapid city,
SD. She is also survived by her mother Frances Christensen of
Beresford, SD., her sister Janice Clark of Surprise, AZ., her brothers Bill (Lorena) Christensen of Phoenix, AZ., Ron (Lin) Christensen of
Beresford, SD., Don Christensen of Alcester, SD., seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and her best friend Maxine Groner.
Beverly was preceded by her husband Duane and her father Melvin Christensen.
She will be laid to rest with her husband Duane in The Black Hills National Cemetery Friday May 7, 2010. There will be a gravesite service at the cemetery at 2:30 PM.
A memorial service will be held at the Newcastle, Wyoming United Methodist Church at 10:00 AM Saturday May 8, 2010.
A memorial has been established to the Newcastle First United Methodist Church and the Newcastle B.R.E.A.D. office. This is the food pantry where Beverly has volunteered her time to.
