Paul A Miller, 81, Newcastle died Wednesday, April 14th, 2010.
Surviving him are his wife Alcina of Newcastle; son John Paul (Ronda) Miller of Lead;
step children Michael (Emily) Brick of Rapid City; Kristine (William) Becca of
Bloomington, MN; Daniel Brick and Patrick Brick of Spearfish; mother and father
in law Margie and Ken Lovik of Rapid City; nephew Guy (Karen) Miller of Newcastle.
Also surviving are nine brother and sisters-in-laws; many nieces and nephews; and two
great nephews.
Memorial services for Paul will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, April 24th at Worden Chapel in Newcastle with Pastors Charles Dutcher and Bill Haley of The Country Church at Four Corners, Wyoming officiating.
Paul was born February 13, 1929 in Lead, South Dakota the son of Paul and Nora
(Ferreo) Miller, Sr. and was a 1946 graduate of Lead High School. After attending West Point Academy, Paul graduated in 1950 with a degree in Geological Engineering from SDSM&T. At age 26 he became General Manager of Bald Mountain Mining Company, the youngest mining manager in North America. Paul wrote a thesis on the study of Bald Mountain Mining area in Lawrence County, South Dakota from which he received a Master's Degree in Mining Engineering from SDSM&T in 1962.
Paul worked several years for Peter Kiewit & Sons as an engineer on the Minuteman II
Project. He was also very involved in the planning of the Terry Peak recreational
development. For a few years he managed the Rock Springs (WY) Coca-Cola Bottling Company in Rock Springs. In 1968 he continued working as a mining engineer for the Sierra
Silver Mining Company in Las Vegas, Nevada. He became Vice President and
Secretary/Treasurer of Warbonnet, Inc. of Trojan, SD. In 1972 Paul became President of
Bald Mountain Mining Company where he was engaged in reorganization of mining interests
and negotiations for acquisitions. From 1973-1979 he was employed by Inspection and Testing Services of Lithonia, Georgia. Paul inspected the treatment of timber products at Whitewood Post and Pole Company of Whitewood, South Dakota. In 1974 he became President of Trojan Mining Company. At the time of his death, Paul was current managing Vice President of Bald Mountain Mining Company.
Even though Paul and Alcina (Nold)-Brick met late in life they shared a special relationship.
A relationship so special they joined together on December 27th, 2008 in holy matrimony at a service attended by both their families.
Paul truly loved life. Paul made a strong impression on all he met. He will be remembered as incredibly hard-working and passionate about his profession. He was fiercely independent. He was well read and highly intelligent. He had a great appreciation for nature and its natural resources. Paul especially enjoyed his home in Parmlee Canyon and the beaver dam where he loved fishing.
Paul was a member of Sigma Tau, honorary engineering fraternity at South Dakota
School of Mines & Technology; the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical
Engineers; Board of Governors of the American Mining Congress; Colorado/Wyoming bottlers
Association and the National Soft Drink Bottlers Association.
Preceding him in death were his Parents Paul and Nora Miller Sr.; Brother Floyd Miller; Father-in-law Peter Nold; first wife Doreen Ferreo and second wife Carol Jean Cone.
The family prefers memorial contributions be given in his memory to the Weston County Humane Society, or the Newcastle Senior Citizens Center entertainment fund.
Honorary bearers will be David Baldinger, Ron Berdahl, Larry Berger, Don Valentine, Terry Nold, Dennis Masteller and Larry Shama.
