Funeral services were held for Newcastle resident John M. Patik, Sr. 88, will be at Worden Funeral Chapel in Newcastle on Monday, July 30 at 2:00 p.m., with eulogist Marv Proctor leading the service. Graveside services were held in Lander, WY at Mount Hope Cemetery on Tuesday, July 31 at 2:00 p.m. Mr. Patik died July 27, 2012 at Weston Manor Nursing Home in Newcastle.
John was born January 25, 1924 in Popo Agie, Wyoming, the son of Steve and Addie M. (Mills) Patik. John attended school at the Popo Agie Mine School through eighth grade; then he attended high school in Lander, graduating with the class of 1942. Immediately after graduation, John enlisted in the Navy, where he served during World War II until 1946. Over the years, John had many jobs in Lander. He was a bartender at Avalon Bar, a plumber and serviceman for Bob Hayes, the city building inspector for Lander, a first aid and safety man at U.S. Steel, and the chief electrician at the Wyoming State Training School. He served on the Lander City Council for over eight years, including a term as president of the council, and was the Police Commissioner of Lander. John was also a member of the Lander Fire Department for fifteen years. In addition, for twenty-seven years, John worked as a Special Duty Sheriff out of Hudson, Wyoming, while he was the bouncer for the El Toro Club.
In 1974, John and his family moved to Newcastle, where he became the coordinator for the Weston County Weed and Pest Control District. He was the Weed and Pest Control coordinator out of Custer, South Dakota at the time of his retirement. After retirement, John helped his son out at the plumbing shop in Newcastle, always staying busy.
John was an avid outdoorsman; he loved to fish and hunt. His love for hunting and wildlife was seen in the gate made of shed horns on John's home in Newcastle. He also enjoyed running his trap lines; once trapping a bobcat and then keeping it in his back yard for a period of time. John was notorious for having a good sense of humor; his teasing and "giving people a hard time" were well known and looked forward to by the family and friends who loved him.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Steve and Addie Patik.
John is survived by his three children: John M. Jr. (Shirley), Steve A., and Michelle M. (Sweet); four grandsons: Mike (Nicole) Patik, Max (Paige) Patik, Steve (Lori) Patik, and Tyler Patik; two granddaughters: Kaylee and Morgan Sweet; six great-grandchildren; and many friends he considered family.
