Mary VanDeWEGHE

October 14, 1914 — January 11, 2005

Mary Van De Weghe was born October 14, 1914, in Detroit, Michigan. She grew up on Hillger Street. Her father, Alphonse Kerchove, and she helped her mom Marie run a boarding house. Alphonse died in Belgium when Mary was 12. She had a brother, Henry, who died at four months, and two sisters - Angie and Alice-who are her best friends today. She attended St. Bernard's School, and in her later teens worked at a tire factory. Mary met Ray Van De Weghe, a tool and die maker, through her cousin Julian, and they were married September 17, 1937. They raised three children-Raymond, Christine, and Richard - on Algonquin Street. In 1952, Ray and Mary moved to Mary Ann Steet, in Utica, and had a fourth child, Marilyn. Eventually, the couple traveled to North Carolina, Florida, West Viriginia, Niagara Falls, and New Mexico. They were married 58 years when Ray passed away January 18, 1996. Mary's hobbies were reading, sewing, and baking. Her favorites were raisin bread, lemon meringue pie and chicken. Mary always enjoyed visiting friends and her family was her pride and joy. She has 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Mary joined the Pine Meadow family in January 2003, and enjoys the fellowship of her peers. Bingo, crafts, sing-alongs, and musical entertainment are among her favorite pastimes. "Mary always has a friendly hello for everyone," activities director Colleen Kelley says. Mrs. VanDeWeghe is survived by Raymond Judith, Christine Richard Colpaert, Richard Judith, and Marilyn Jerry Morey. Also survived by twelve grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held Friday from 2:00pm-9:00pm with a prayer service at 7:00pm -Wm. Sullivan & Son Funeral Home, 8459 Hall Road 3 blocks east of VanDykeUtica. She will lie in state Saturday 9:30am until time of funeral mass at 10:00am at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, 44633 Utica Road, Utica. Memorials are suggested to The Capuchins-1820 Mt.
