Mary M. Edgmon Kuemmerle, 101, died Monday, March 13, 2006 encircled by loving family at her bedside in Campbell County Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be Friday, March 17 at 2:00 p.m. at Worden Funeral Chapel in Newcastle, Wyoming with Pastor Dan Morgan and Pastor Brian Anderberg officiating.
Mary was born August 4, 1904, daughter of Thomas Bird and Harriet Ann Birdwell Edgmon. Mary was born in Pickens County-Chickasaw Nation Indian Territory in Oklahoma. Her first twelve years she lived on a farm in the Arbuckle Mountains near Davis Oklahoma. Her father died when she was nine months old, and her mother died in 1916. Mary then moved to Nebraska to live with her older sister Birdie and brother-in-law Japp Mallory. In 1917 they moved to Wyoming where her sister?s husband Japp homesteaded west of Newcastle. Mary attended Fairview School through the eighth grade. On September 4, 1923 Mary married Herbert W. Kuemmerle in Newcastle, Wyoming. Herbert and Mary pioneered on their homestead in the Upton Fairview area. They had a son Carl and three daughters Claire, Patricia, and Gladys.
Mary was a devoted wife and mother, always putting her family first. Mary and Herb moved to Newcastle in 1966 due to Herb?s failing health. In 1973 they moved to Gillette to be next to their daughter and son-in-law, Gladys and Don Pridgeon. Herb passed away in 1978. Mary had some enjoyable years traveling to several states. She enjoyed her 98th birthday dinner in Chicago, Illinois where she had always wanted to visit and her 100th birthday celebration on August 4, 2004 in Gillette. Mary was one of the oldest survivors of the West Nile virus which she contracted in 2003 at the age of 99.
Mary?s spirit of life and joy were evident wherever she went. She enjoyed reading, beautiful flowers and crocheting. Her handiwork is on display in the homes of her family and friends. Mary was also known for her wonderful pies. Mary?s family was her life, and her love and devotion will live on forever with them.
Mary is survived by a son Carl and his wife Hazel of Upton, Wyoming; daughters Claire Finn of Upton, Wyoming, Patricia Kuemmerle of Sheridan, Wyoming and Gladys Pridgeon of Gillette, Wyoming; grandchildren: Linda Finn and Richard Peterson of Sundance, Wyoming, Herb and Elsie Pridgeon of Gillette, Wyoming, Betty Kuemmerle and Tom Latos of De Soto, Texas, Mike and Betty Finn of Upton, Wyoming, Glenda Pridgeon and Rod Warne of Gillette, Wyoming, Carol Kuemmerle and Steve Nicholls of Newcastle, Wyoming, Mary Pridgeon and Danny James of LeHigh Acres, Florida, Marvin and Audry Finn of Sundance, Wyoming, Sharon Kuemmerle of Gillette, Wyoming, and Cindy Kuemmerle and Troy Dysart of Upton, Wyoming. She is also survived by thirty-one great grandchildren and twenty-eight great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brothers John and Walter Edgmon, sisters Ollie Frazer, Birdie Mallory, Belle Clure, Victoria and Annie Anderson, Lillie Birdwell and Dora Mae Birdwell, son-in-laws Virgil Finn and Don Pridgeon and great-great granddaughter, Shayla Rae Finn.
