Laurence Fulton

February 15, 1917 — June 12, 2006

Graveside services for Laurence Lyle Fulton, 89, will be held at 10:00 am Friday, June 16, 2006 at the Greenwood Cemetery in Newcastle, Wyoming. Pastor Wayne Wilson of Gateway Fellowship Church will officiate. The family suggests memorial contributions to benefit Weston County Health Service?s Home Health Agency.

Laurence passed away in his sleep Sunday night, after a period of declining health.

He was born to Henry and Laura Pike Fulton February 15, 1917 on the family homestead 18 miles south of Upton, Wyoming. He was third of six children. When he was four years old, he attended country school so that they would have enough students to have school. He was called upon to help the family through hard times by laying out of school so that he could work at various jobs. He worked on ranches and farms around Upton, in Idaho, Nebraska, and Oregon. He also worked for the Civilian Conservation Corp in Gillette and Guernsey, Wyoming. In July of 1941 he joined the U.S. Army, and was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. While in Missouri he met Elizabeth Vincent. They were married in Abilene, Texas July 11, 1942. D-Day plus two, he landed on Utah Beach, Normandy with the 90th Division. The 90th Division was attached to Patton?s Third Army. As they fought across France and into Germany he was wounded twice receiving the Purple Heart and Oak Leaf Cluster, and he also received the Silver Star and a La Croix De Guerre. He was offered a battlefield commission to second lieutenant, but he was ready for civilian life. Newcastle was to be his and Elizabeth?s home, where they worked, built a home, and raised a daughter Fonda and son Tom.

Lawrence worked in the oil filed in different capacities. He operated a pipe line pump station, worked on a servicing rig, and as a pumper/gauger. He retired at age 70.

He was active in his church, and he was a life time member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Laurence is preceded in death by his wife Elizabeth, father and mother, Sisters Josephine Morfeld, Vera Darlington, and a brother Glen Fulton. He is survived by a sister Sibyl Sager of Rushville, Nebraska, a brother, Cecil Fulton of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, daughter Fonda and her husband Pete Vorpahl of Newcastle, two grandsons, Konrad and Dirck Vorpahl of Rapid City, South Dakota, and his son Tom of Rock Springs, Wyoming.
