Lake Iona Bush, 77 of Newcastle, died Sunday, October 11, 2009 at Weston County Memorial Hospital. Lake was born December 27, 1931 at the Nicolls' family ranch west of Pringle, SD. There she attended country school until the eighth grade. To finish her high school education, she went to Custer, SD and lived with a family, working for her room and board while attending school.
On January 21, 1951 she married Kenneth L. Smith at the family ranch. Lake lived in the Newcastle area for most of her adult life, raising her family and working in several different careers. Many will remember her as the Real Estate broker for Sagebrush Realty, where she worked from 1981 to 2000.
Lake married Herb Bush on May 15, 1975. Lake and Herb loved horses, belonging to the Trail Riding Club for many years, and showing horses at area competitions. She was an avid reader and loved a good mystery.
Survivors include her daughter, Rosanne Smith, Newcastle, and sons Rodney, Newcastle, Mike Patti, Eagle, CO and Hank Jalane, Indialantic, FL; and, one brother, Corbin Helen Nicolls of Newcastle. She loved to spoil her seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death was husband Herb Bush, sister Vivian Cook, and brothers Bob and Lee Nicolls.
Pallbearers were Chet Smith, Ryan Kander, Casey Smith and Paul Farnsworth.
Services will be held 2:30 pm Friday, October 16th at the Worden Funeral Home in Newcastle, with Bill Haley and Charles Dutcher officiating. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Newcastle.
