Rosary for Joe A. Cornella, 82, will be recited at 9:00 am Monday, June 5th at Worden Chapel with Deacon Ken Pitlick. Funeral services will follow at 10:00 am at Worden Chapel. Burial will follow at 2:00 pm at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, South Dakota with military graveside rites. Those wishing to pay their respects may do so from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm Saturday, June 3rd at Worden Chapel.
Joe was born June 10, 1923 at Haynes, North Dakota the son of Alphonce and Winifred Kelleher Cornella. He was raised 10 miles east of Lodgepole, South Dakota, attending country school and later high school in Hettinger, North Dakota. While growing up he worked in his dad?s coal mine in the winter time and sheared sheep in the summer. In 1943 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II and served for four years. He was stationed on the U.S.S. Karnes in the Mariposa Islands for two years and the U.S.S. Medway for two years. He received his honorable discharge December 7, 1947. Joe married Arlie Lorene Hullinger in 1947 in Washington, D. C. and the couple moved to North Dakota. While there he did some ranching and drove truck for Austed Johnston Fuel Liners. They moved to Sundance, Wyoming in 1953 where he worked for the Wyoming Highway Department for thirteen years. He also worked construction for many years. He later met and married Leona Evalyn Fowler in 1973, moving to Newcastle where they made their home. Joe went to work for Kerr-McGee Jacobs Ranch Mine until his retirement in 1988.
Joe loved boating, fishing, taking trips in the motor home, playing cards, bingo and an occasional trip to Deadwood, South Dakota.
He was a member of the American Legion and was a Life Member of VFW Post #2516 of Newcastle, Wyoming. He held several office in local, district, state and national levels.
Survivors in include his wife of Newcastle; two daughters, Judy A. Courtade and Trudy M. Beavers of Casper, WY; two sons, Joseph Randy Cornella and wife Connie of Sundance, WY and Dale Charles Chuck Cornella and wife Terry of Thermopolis, WY three step sons, Merle Goode and wife Michelle of Butte, Montana, Steve Fowler and Jimmy Fowler both of Newcastle; three sisters, Mary Scott of Sturgis, SD, Midge Holmes of Faith, SD, Gene Doore and husband Vaughn of Lodgepole, SD; fifteen grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents, three brothers, Ed Emmanuel and Terry; one sister Eileen; and one granddaughter Carrie Ann.
