Helen Cooper, age 90, of Royal Oak, passed away peacefully at home on November 4, 2013. Loving wife of Russell Cooper. Proud mother of the late J. Ernest Bonnie Cooper, Thomas Penny Cooper and David Cooper. Dear grandmother of Matthew Tracy Cooper, Emily George McNabb, Jordan Stephanie Cooper, and Nathan Cooper. Helen is survived by several great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Helen was born in Carnwath, Scotland to John and Mary Aitken. Her family, including brother, Ian, moved to Canada in April of 1925. In September two years later, they arrived in the United States. True to her Scottish heritage, Helen was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Order of Scottish Clans from 1947-1975. She served 8 one-year terms as President. Helen and Russ married on June 16, 1945, celebrating their 68th wedding anniversary this year. They enjoyed a remarkable devotion to each other. Together they traveled the world with the travel group, Nomads. They visited 49 countries and all 50 states. An avid bowler for 35 years, she and Russ enjoyed this activity together and, one year, they had the same average. They both volunteered at Beaumont Hospital. Russ is a Mason and Helen served as an officer in the Eastern Star. To the last day of her life, Helen and Russ were devoted members of First Presbyterian Church of Royal Oak. Members since 1963, they attended Presbys meetings together. Helen served as an installed Deacon and belonged to several circles. She served 8 two-year terms as Chairman. She was active in the Women's Association and sang in the ladies church choir, "The Grace Notes" for five years. Visitation will be held Sunday, November 10th from 3-8 p.m. at Wm. Sullivan & Son Funeral Home, 705 W 11 Mile Rd., in Royal Oak. Funeral services will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Royal Oak on Monday, November 11th at 11 a.m. in the sanctuary with visitation at 10 a.m. in the parlor.
