George Haddad

December 20, 1922 — May 27, 2011

Haddad, George John, age 88, a well-known retired tax attorney and former Appellate Officer of the Internal Revenue Service, passed from us on May 27, 2011. His illustrious career spanned 51 years. Hired as one of the first Arab-Americans to work at the U.S. Treasury Department's Detroit IRS office, he progressed from revenue agent to the prestigious Appellate Division, where he handled some of the most complex corporate, estate, gift and excise tax cases. He also taught classes in Washington, D.C. and at Walsh College. Upon his decision to retire from the IRS with 31 years of service, he was recruited by John Raymond to join the firm Raymond & Dillon, commencing a 20-year career as a tax attorney until age 77. George was born of Lebanese and Syrian immigrant parents at his family home on Rollins St. in Boston's South End, residing there until his move to Detroit with his new bride Evelyn Tinory Haddad in 1948. After WW II service in the U.S. Army Air Corps, he graduated from Boston University in 1948 with a BS in Business Administration. Other notable accomplishments were his 1971 graduation from Wayne State University Law School, his admission to the Michigan Bar 1971, U.S. Tax Court 1980, and U.S. Court of Appeals, 6th Circuit 1984. George was an affable, loving man known for his devotion to his wife and children, his wise counsel, his faith, and his generous heart. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Evelyn, his dear sister, Bernadette, and loving cousins. He will be sorely missed by his children and their spouses/partners: Carol Margot Duley, George Karen Denise Davis, and Mary Michael Raveane, his grandson Alexander, his niece Marilyn Lotfy Wentworth and family, his cousins and their families, extended family in Massachusetts, and close friends and former law office colleagues. Memorial visitation will be on Saturday June 4, 2011 from 11:00 a.m. until time of Memorial Service 1:00 p.m. at the Wm. Sullivan & Son Funeral Home 705 W. 11 Mile Rd. 4 blks.
