Frank J. Martin, age 87, a veteran newspaperman, who worked on a number of papers in the East and Midwest, died September 2, 2012 in Tempe, AZ. A former resident of Huntington Woods, he was born in New York City. He held degrees in English and History from Columbia University and was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II. A reporter and copy editor, he worked for, among others, the Providence Journal and Toledo Times. In Detroit, he worked for the Detroit Times, Detroit Free Press, Automotive News and the Detroit News. He was on the sports desk at the Detroit News for many years before switching to the main news desk, where he was chief copy editor. He retired in 1990. He was preceded in death by his wife Marguerite, his daughter Anne and son Paul. He is survived by his daughters, Constance Martin of Huntington Woods, Marie Gordon of Knightdale, NC, Louise Baker of Rockford, MI and Ellen Pope of Tempe, AZ; sons, James of Houston, TX and Matthew of Denver, CO; sister, Mary Koleski of Indianapolis; 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
