Frances Ball

July 21, 1926 — June 12, 2013

Frances "Sally" Reid Ball passed away on June 12, 2013 in Plymouth, MI. She was 86 years old. Sally was born Frances Lucy Reid in Detroit on July 21, 1926 to Frances Leah Dodge Reid and Wallace Edward Reid. Sally grew up in Ferndale, MI and attended the University of Michigan, like her father, brother and sister. Becoming engaged to Bruce Barton Ball while attending college, she liked to say "I earned my MRS degree at U-M!" In rapid succession, they lived at Bennett Lake, in Flint, MI and Cleveland, OH while starting their family, and while Bruce completed his education and then took a job with Ford Motor Co. helping to open their Cleveland foundry. By 1955 they had moved to Detroit and stayed until 1981, when they retired to Florida. Bruce's untimely passing brought Sally back to family and friends in Michigan. She resumed her work as a church secretary, and after retiring from that, volunteered at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute. She had many good friends and enjoyed social gatherings, especially with her extended family. Sally was predeceased by her husband, Bruce, and her brother, Edward Reid. She is survived by her sister Janice Hawkins; her children Janet John Ardelan, David, and Stephen Carol Himelhoch; and by six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held at the Wm. Sullivan & Son Funeral Home, 705 W. Eleven Mile Rd., Royal Oak, MI on June 17, 2013 from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11 a.m. Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery on Woodward Ave. in Detroit. Her family offers special thanks to the staff at Independence Village and Reverence Hospice for the excellent care they provided for Sally. Condolences may be offered at www.sullivanfuneraldirectors.com. Donations in Sally's name may be made to the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute at https://www.karmanos.org/donations/default.aspx.
