Floyd Stanton was born at Newcastle , Wyoming on
January 15, 1925, the youngest son of Glenn and Annie
Stanton. Both his parents had grown up on Cold Creek
where Floyd?s grandparents, the George Stantons, ran
the Buckhorn store, creamery, and post office for many
years. His parents moved to Moskee in 1924 and his
dad worked for Homestake Mining Company hauling logs
from the mill to the gold mine in Lead, South Dakota.
They were living at Moskee when Floyd was born. In
1929 the family moved to Rapid City , South Dakota
where Floyd grew up and received his education. He
was al-ways active in all school sports and as a boy
spent many summers in Wyo-ming at the Reynolds ranch.
During the war Floyd was unable to enlist
in any branch of the mili-tary so he went to
Califor-nia and joined the Coast Guard. He spent two
years at San Pedro where he helped build ships. After
the war he returned to South Dakota and for sev-eral
years worked for Pen-nington County Highway
Department, then for Rounds Construction build-ing
roads around the coun-try. On a job near Upton in
1947 he first met Opal Moore. Floyd and Opal were
married on November 20, 1949 in a ceremony at her
parents? home in Upton . For several years he worked
for E. A. Beck Construction and helped build many of
the homes in town. He later worked for the Wilmot
Brothers M & M service station when it was first built
and managed the station for several years. He began
working for the school as Mainte-nance Supervisor and
drove the activities bus for the Upton Bobcats. He
was always a big favorite of all the kids.
In 1969 Floyd and Opal bought the Martens
ranch east of Upton . They resided there until 2005
when they moved to Spear-fish, South Dakota .
Floyd is survived by his loving wife Opal,
his sons, Randy Sandy Stanton of Rapid City, SD;
MontyRonda of Upton, WY; 6 grandchildren: Melissa
and Reggie Stanton; Jennifer, Toby, Cody and Cory
Stanton, a brother Robert Stanton and a sister Lois
Kluthe, nu-merous aunts, uncles, cous-ins, nieces and
nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a
baby brother Theral.
