Edward K. Kurz, 81, a resident of Roscommon, formerly of Detroit, died February 18, 2009 at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. He was born March 7, 1927 in Detroit. Edward was the second generation owner of the Dakota Inn Rathskeller, serving Detroit for 75 years. The restaurant was opened in 1933 by its founder, Karl Kurz, and is still family-owned and operated by the third generation, Edward's son, Karl E. Kurz. The Dakota Inn is a registered historical landmark by the Michigan Historical Commission. After retiring, Edward moved to Higgins Lake, where he enjoyed his lake home, boating, woodworking and travel. He is survived by his children, Carol Kamlay, Doreen Dennis Durandetto, Karl Patti Kurz and Lori Brian Kenny; grandchildren, Lisa and Kristen Kenny; and sister, Hilda Howarth. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Kurz, on October 31, 2005; and his parents, Karl and Katherine Kurz. Visitation will be Sunday 2-8 p.m. and the service Monday 11 a.m. at Wm.
