Edward Jakobcic, a World War II U.S. Coast Guard veteran who served in the Pacific Theatre and a Korean War U.S. Army veteran, passed away on Thursday, April 15, 2010. Ed was a longtime resident of Southgate, and lived near family in Royal Oak at the American House prior to passing at the age of 84 due to complications of pneumonia. He was also a longtime member and usher at St. Pius X Parish in Southgate. He was exceptionally talented at playing the accordion, and enjoyed playing with friends at family gatherings. He was also an accomplished waltz and polka dancer, enjoyed smoking his pipe, bingo, cooking, and picnicking in Canada at Point Pelee and Pinery. After the Korean War, Ed was a small business owner of a meatpacking business in Eastern Market and later a furniture store. His wife Barbara passed in 1984, after her second battle with cancer. He also lost his longtime companion, Tina Cianciolo, in 2006. He was the youngest and last survivor of his siblings. His surviving family members include his children, Gary, Daniel, Dale, Susan and Sharon; and grandchildren, Tim, Katie, Ben, Patricia, Alicia and Cyrus. The visitation will be held Sunday 2-8 p.m. with a 7 p.m. rosary at the Wm. Sullivan & Son Funeral Home, 705 W 11 Mile Rd. 4 blks. E of Woodward, Royal Oak. The funeral Mass, with a military tribute, will be Monday 12 noon at the National Shrine of the Little Flower, 2100 W. 12 Mile Road, Royal Oak.
