Edgar C. Kiefer, age 88, a 50-year Royal Oak resident, died Tuesday, October 14, 2008, at William Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak. He was born April 7, 1920, in Detroit. Mr. Kiefer was a 50-year member of the Shrine parish where he ushered for many years. He was a P-47 Thunderbolt fighter pilot for the 9th USAAF, 365th Fighter Group, the "Hell Hawks", during World War II, where he received several medals and flew over 50 missions. He enjoyed playing bridge and golf and doing carpentry. He also loved to spend his summers at his cottage in Black River, MI. Surviving are his children, Richard Patricia Kiefer of Boulder, CO, Michael Suzanne Kiefer of South Haven, Mary Ann Paul Corrigan of Huntington Woods, Marcia Jerry Dougan of Fremont and Paul Fumiko Kiefer of Auburn, WA; siblings, Helen Gaynor, William Kiefer, Mary McPhee, Carol Schulte, Janet Smith, Elaine Burke and Barbara Fackler; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Kiefer, on March 17, 2008. The couple were married August 5, 1944, in Abilene, TX; and sisters, Eleanor Kiefer and Patricia VanHove. Visitation Friday 3-8 p.m. with a 6:30 p.m. scripture service at Wm. Sullivan & Son Funeral Home, 705 W 11 Mile Rd. 4 blks. E of Woodward, Royal Oak.
