Doris Luella Weibert

Doris Luella (Harris) Weibert, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 8, 2024, at the age of 94. Born on September 25, 1930, to Lloyd A. (Ted) and Straucy Luella (Saunders) Harris, Doris spent her early years on a farm in Montana, where she developed a love for nature, animals, and the simple joys of life.

Doris began her teaching career in a one-room country school nestled in the Wolf Mountains of Montana, a testament to her passion for nurturing young minds. On a sunny afternoon in January 1949, she married her soulmate, Fred John Weibert. Their union, which began just before the notorious Blizzard of ’49, marked the start of a remarkable 70-year adventure filled with love, laughter, and countless cherished memories.

The couple raised their family on the ranch along Reno Creek, Montana, until 1965, when they moved to the 20 Mile Ranch in Custer, South Dakota. Together, they welcomed three children: Fred (Jonilee) Weibert of Bridgeport, NE, (Steve) Marguerite Cullum of Custer, SD, and Judy Kosola of Upton, WY. Doris’s greatest joy came from her family, particularly her grandchildren, who always felt their time with Grandma was nothing short of magical. She was immensely proud of her family legacy, which includes 9 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, 13 great-great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-great-grandchildren.

Doris had a profound love for her yard, her vibrant flowers, large vegetable garden, and the many special dogs that graced her life. She found joy in the simple things—hanging clothes on the line, exploring the ranch, and discovering unique rocks along the way. Though she humbly claimed to be “just a farm cook,” her culinary adventures were legendary. She was always eager to try new recipes, from homemade noodles to candy, and her table was always full, welcoming friends and neighbors with open arms. No one ever left her home hungry.

In her early years in Custer, Doris worked as an aide at the local hospital and later babysat neighborhood children, cherishing the bonds she formed with each family. She also contributed to the community by working at the Coast-to-Coast store before moving to Wibaux, Montana, where they ranched for a brief time. Ultimately, Fred and Doris returned to the Hermosa area, ranching at Battle Creek, Fairburn, and even raising buffalo along the Cheyenne River before retiring to Upton, Wyoming, in 1997.

Doris celebrated her 94th birthday with pride, living independently in her own home, a testament to her spirited nature and resilience. Her family and friends will forever remember her kindness, warmth, and the unwavering love she shared.

A private family committal service will be held in Hermosa for both Fred and Doris, with a celebration of life planned for a later date in Upton, Wyoming.

Doris Weibert will be deeply missed, but her spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
