Funeral Mass for Daniel O. ?Dan? Porter, 89, will be celebrated at 10:00 am Wednesday, December 19th at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Newcastle. Visitation will be held from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm at Worden Chapel on Tuesday, December 18th. Recitation of the Rosary will be at 7:00 pm Tuesday, December 18th at Corpus Christi Church. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions to charities of the donor?s choice.
Mr. Porter died Friday, December 14th at Rapid Regional Hospital, Rapid City, South Dakota.
He was born September 7, 1918 at Gebo, Wyoming the son of Thomas Daniel and Ruth Almenia Nee Dickey Porter. He attended schools in Wyoming and California, including Newcastle WY High School. As a young man, Dan worked as a coal miner in Montana and Wyoming. During World War II he was a certified welder at a ship yard in Portland, Oregon. He returned to Wyoming where he worked as a heavy equipment operator and contractor, building reservoirs and roads through the late 1950?s. He married Fern Rosean on October 31, 1941 at Newcastle, Wyoming. In 1964, he returned to the dirt work contracting around Newcastle, moving to the oil fields around Gillette in 1966. In 1970 he went to work as a millwright at the High Lite gas plant South of Gillette. In 1972 Dan retired due to health problems and moved to the family ranch South of Newcastle.
Dan was an avid fisherman and hunter. He enjoyed golf and gatherings with family and friends. He loved to cook, especially his special pies.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, children Mary Ann Carl Mc Glaughlin of Newcastle, Daniel R. Sandra Porter of Gillette, Kathie Gene Morgan of Washington, Utah, Ruth Liggett of Newcastle, Edward Cindy Porter of Newcastle, Mike Porter of Osage, WYT, Sandy Jake Clouse of Thermopolis, Wyoming. A sister Ovella Bing of Gillette, WY; sisters in law Mary Porter of Thermopolis and Zatel Porter of Phoenix, AZ. Also surviving are 15 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren 8 step grandchildren, 14 step great grandchildren and 6 step great great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and 4 brothers and 2 sisters.
