Beverly Land

July 22, 1926 — February 7, 2012

Beverly Grace Hook Land, 85, longtime resident of Pleasant Ridge and Royal Oak, and more recently of Reston, Virginia, died on Tuesday, February 7th. She was born in Detroit on July 22, 1926 to a family with a long history in Detroit. A grandfather was Samuel T. Hook, who owned Hook's Dry Goods Store located at Milwaukee and Woodward Avenue in the early 1900's. A great grandfather was George Heigho, a Captain in the Detroit Police and Detroit's first sealer of weights and measures. She attended Kalamazoo College and Wayne State University, graduating with a B.A. in Political Science and a M.A. in Education. She taught in the Detroit Public Schools from 1950 to 1960, where she also supervised student teachers and was appointed Assistant Principal at the Maybury Elementary School. After raising three children, she returned to teaching at Barton Elementary and Cerveny Middle Schools in Detroit from 1979 to 1987. In the 1980's she obtained a degree in counseling from Mercy College of Detroit and worked briefly as a substance abuse counselor at Henry Ford Hospital - Maplegrove. She was an avid reader and enjoyed theater, movies, the arts and bridge. In 1997, she moved to Arlington, Virginia to spend her retirement years closer to her children and grandchildren. She passed away in Reston, Virginia. She is survived by her three children: Brian Ellen, Vienna, Va.; Diane Tim, Las Vegas; and Susan Glenn, Arlington, Va.; and five grandchildren: Michael, Mark, Matthew, Benjamin, and Samuel. She was predeceased by her parents, Claude and Grace Hook, and her brother Henry Hook. Her marriage to R. Donald Land ended in divorce. Visitation will be Friday, Feb. 10, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Wm. Sullivan & Son Funeral Home, 705 W. Eleven Mile Rd., Royal Oak and funeral services will be Saturday, Feb. 11, at 10 a.m. at Mariners' Church of Detroit, 170 E.
