Funeral services for Betty "Bunny" Shurley, 82, will be held at 2:00 pm Wednesday, May 20th at Worden Chapel with Pastor Hugh B. Ward of First Presbyterian Church, Moultrie, Georgia officiating. A family and friends visitation will be held Tuesday May 19th at Worden Chapel from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. The family requests memorial contributions towards an educational scholarship to be established in her name. Mrs. Shurley died Tuesday, May 12th at the home of her daughter in Moultrie, Georgia.
Betty May Short was born on September 20, 1926 in Crescent, Oklahoma to Albert and Susie Bailey Short. She spent her childhood in Crescent and graduated from high school, continuing her education at the University of Oklahoma where she received a degree in Fine Arts.
She married Hal H. Shurley on July 19, 1946 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In September, 1953, the couple moved to Newcastle, Wyoming. Bunny retired from Newcastle School District No. 1 in 1988, following 32 years of teaching English in the eighth grade and being English Department Chairperson Ka�"12, for 14 years. During her teaching career she was selected as Newcastle's Teacher of the Year, served as President of the Wyoming Association of Teachers on English WATE, and participated in programs at the national level of the National Council of Teachers of English NCTE. Following retirement, she continued to substitute in the Newcastle schools until 2000. Most recently, she led Humanities classes in Newcastle for the University of Wyoming until 2005. In total, she taught in Newcastle for nearly 50 years.
Bunny was a long time member of the Newcastle Education Association and Wyoming Education Association. Her other memberships include P.E.O., Chapter AG, The First United Methodist Church, Newcastle Country Club, 21st Century, Bridge Club, Reading Group, and a lifetime membership to the Oklahoma University Alumni Association. She is a former member of Order of the Eastern Star, Weston County Historical Society, Newcastle Chamber of Commerce and Delta Kappa Gamma. She was 1995 Beta Sigma Phi First Lady. She directed Harvey and The Sound of Music with the local theater company. Bunny loved to travel, having visited all 50 United States and all continents excepting only Australia, Africa and Antarctica.
Preceding her in death were her parents, husband Hal, brothers Isaac and Scott Short, and sister Alberta Cloyd Linville.
Surviving her is a daughter, Susanne Thomas Voss of Moultrie, GA; one grandson Hal Logan Heather Perino; three great-grandchildren Ryan, Rachel and Roman Perino of Newcastle; special niece Beverly Linville Pat Cooper and son Patrick of Port Ludlow, WA; special nephew Steven Linville Jackie and sons Christopher and Michael of Sterling, VA.
