Barry Nordell Peterson, 78, passed away on December 23, 2023 in Newcastle, WY. Born on November 17, 1945, in Greeley, CO, Barry was a devoted father, grandfather, brother and veteran who brought light and joy into the lives of those who loved him.
Barry served in the United States Air Force from 1967 to 1970 and the Wyoming Army National Guard from 1978 to 1980. He fought for his country and defended others with unwavering dedication. Barry’s commitment to serving others extended beyond his military service. He dedicated his career to public service, retiring from the Wyoming Honor Conservation Camp in Newcastle, WY as Deputy/Acting Warden in 2005. He also most recently served as an Adjutant professor of Criminal Justice for Eastern Wyoming College.
Barry’s extensive affiliations and offices held throughout his life were a testament to his passion for making a positive impact. He was the recipient of the Slim Fox award in 1981 by the Converse County Peace Officers Association, recognizing him as the Peace Officer of the year. Barry was a life member of the American Legion and served as the Commander of the local Post #3 from 1997 to 2004. He was also a member of the WY Republican Party State Executive Committee District 7 from 2009 to 2013.
Outside of his professional life, Barry enjoyed attending Post 22 baseball games, military gala’s and Republican conventions. He cherished these moments and the camaraderie they brought.
Barry is survived by his sister Sueva M. Terry (husband Tom), brother Craig Peterson, niece Mijken Baldo, and daughter Tiffany McGinn (husband Matthew). He was preceded in death by his mother Martha P. Carpenter (Peterson) and father Donald S. Peterson.
A ceremony to honor Barry’s life will be held at the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, SD on Tuesday, January 16 at 11a.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Disabled American Veterans at www.dav.org.
