Alice Johnson

December 20, 1921 — August 4, 2009

Memorial services for Alice M. Johnson, 87, will be held at 2:00 pm Friday, August 7th at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Gene Hagerman officiating. The family prefers memorial contributions be given to First United Methodist Church or the Newcastle Senior Center.

Mrs. Johnson died Tuesday, August 4th at Weston County Health Services following a lengthy illness.

Alice was born December 20, 1921 at Oacoma, SD the daughter of Langdon and Esther Howard Landis. As a small child her family moved to Wanblee, SD where her father homesteaded. They lived there until the family moved to Custer, SD in 1930. She attended school at Custer, graduating in 1940.

On March 31, 1943, she married E. Lewis Johnson at Minturn, CO. To this union three children were born, Dean Allen, Beth Marie, and Carl Lewis. The couple lived in Colorado and South Dakota before settling in Newcastle, WY in 1947. Alice did not work out of the home until her children were finishing high school. She then went to work at Weston County Memorial Hospital as a Nurses Aide and Ward Clerk. She was the first recipient of the "Dr. Thorpe Caring for Mankind" Award. She retired after 32 years.

Alice enjoyed any handi-work; quilting, crocheting, etc. She also enjoyed singing with a group. She was a member of the "Joy Singers" and the "Melodees." She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, a fifty year member and Past Noble Grand of Gateway Rebekah Lodge, and an active member of Weston County Senior Services. She taught Sunday school, Girl Scouts, was a Den-Mother and 4-H Leader.

Survivors are son Dean and wife Carol of Rochester, MN and son Carl and wife Mary of Denver, CO. sister in law Belva Landis of Baltimore, MD, sisters Helen Sandberg of Salem, SD, Hazel and husband John Jacobsen of Florida, Shirley Fernen of Mission, SD, and Donna and husband Kent Knutson of Moorhead, MN. Seven grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding her were her parents, husband Lewis, daughter Beth Marie Ellis, one brother, one sister and one grandson.
