Mr. Tunnell, 82, died at the Wyoming Medical Center in Casper, on August 18th, 2007. He had been diagnosed with Lou Gehrig?s disease.
Aaron was born January 19, 1925 in Grady, New Mexico to Thurmon and Roxie Brown Tunnell. As an infant, he contracted polio. The family moved to Hot Springs, NM where he attended school through the 6th grade. He and his brother would catch wild horses and ride them all over the country side. The family then moved to Hawthorne, CA. where he graduated from Leuzinger High School in 1943. He worked in a nursery for a short time, until he got his draft classification as 4-F due to the polio paralysis, he was then able to get a job with the air craft factories. After the war he went back to Carlsbad, NM where his mother had moved and helped his grandpa break wild horses.
He took a job with Miller?s Geophysical Company in West Texas exploring for oil. He moved with the company to Meeteetsee, WY., then to Newcastle. Miller?s disbanded in Newcastle in early 1950. He worked odd jobs until Ty Thomas, then Mayor of Newcastle, hired him in December of 1950 as a billing clerk. The office was then located in Mumper?s Mortuary. He worked his way up from there retiring as City Treasurer, after 42 years with the City. Up until he went to work for the City, he had always gone by ?Gordon?, but Ty Thomas started calling him Aaron and he didn?t want to correct him, so it was Aaron from then on, except to the family and close friends. Aaron was a quiet, private person.
After retirement Gordon and Irene enjoyed RVing for 5 years until his health deteriorated.
